Shuker nets Cajun Classic doubles title

LUCY Shuker brought a three week block of tournaments in the United States for Britain’s wheelchair tennis players to a successful end on Sunday when she partnered Dutch player Aniek van Koot to win the women’s doubles at the Cajun Classic in Baton Rouge, Louisiana.

The defending champions and top seeds had a bye into the semifinals of the ITF 1 Series event before securing the best possible start with a 6-0, 6-0 win over Marjolein Buis of the Netherlands and Colombia’s Johana Martinez.

Shuker and van Koot then completed their triumph with a 6-1, 6-1 victory over second seeds Katharina Kruger of Germany and Belgium’s Annick Sevenans in the final.

Earlier in the week, Somerset-based British No 1 Shuker had lost to world No 10 Sevenans in three sets in the women’s singles quarter-finals.

Shuker’s third doubles title of the season earns her her first doubles ranking points gain in 2010 and reinforces her world No 7 doubles ranking.  Shuker and van Koot will pick up doubles ranking points this week after the Cajun Classic was upgraded from the ITF 2 Series status it held in 2009.
