The difference a WAV can make to life

FREEDOM: Kitty Walker says her WAV makes travelling so much easier

FOR SOME wheelchair users, a standard car can continue to be a practical means of transport.

However, for others, transferring between a wheelchair and a vehicle seat can become increasingly difficult, time-consuming or physically demanding. In these cases, a wheelchair accessible vehicle (WAV) can offer greater comfort, convenience and independence.

According to Allied Mobility, the UK’s leading wheelchair accessible vehicle supplier, one of the most common reasons people choose a WAV is the ability to enter, travel and exit the vehicle while remaining in their wheelchair.

So, what exactly are the key differences between a wheelchair accessible vehicle and a standard car?

Easier access, less effort

Compared with a standard car, entering and exiting a WAV is often easier and more comfortable thanks to built-in accessibility features such as a lowered floor, a lightweight rear access ramp and an electric-assist winch, helping to reduce physical effort for you and your companion or carer.

Allied Mobility customer Kitty Walker explains: “I think a WAV can help the overall health of you and your carer or the person that’s helping you, especially as you and your carer get older.

“It means you can go out more and enjoy outings knowing that it’s not such hard work, the ramp just comes down and I can wheel right in and away we go – it is so simple!”

A WAV can also be a fantastic option if you’re the parent of a disabled child, particularly as transfers become increasingly challenging as they grow.

For Tracy, from Lowestoft, making the switch to a WAV transformed everyday journeys with her daughter, Daisy: “Before, we needed two people to actually get Daisy into the car, whereas with the WAV, one person can do it – it’s nice and easy. So, if you’re struggling to get your child in and out of car seats, I highly recommend you consider a WAV.”

Practicality, safety, comfort

Unlike a standard car where a wheelchair often needs to be folded down, lifted and stored in the vehicle’s boot, a key benefit of a WAV is the convenience of remaining seated in your wheelchair throughout the journey.

And just like in a standard car, an Allied Mobility WAV offers a three-point seat belt with the bonus of high-quality Q’Straint restraints to keep you safe and secure.

WAVs also offer the comfort and technology expected from a standard vehicle, alongside flexible seating layouts with space for passengers, luggage and mobility equipment.

Is a WAV right for you?

It all depends on your individual needs. However, for many wheelchair users and families, a WAV can make everyday journeys easier, safer and more comfortable while supporting greater independence.
