Minister addresses dementia scientists

HEALTH Minister Phil Hope will today address the Alzheimer’s Research Trust’s conference in Southampton, the UK’s largest ever gathering of dementia scientists.

In a statement to be read by ART’s chief executive Rebecca Wood, the Minister will refer to the Ministerial Advisory Group on Dementia Research, which is aiming to increase the volume, quality and impact of dementia research in the UK.

Care Services Minister Phil Hope said:

“Dementia is one of the most serious issues we face as a society. Research is the key to developing new treatments, transforming care and ultimately finding a cure for this devastating condition.

“By 2011, the Government will be investing more than ever – over £1.7 billion – in health research. I want to see more dementia research proposals successfully access these funds.

“The Ministerial Advisory Group on Dementia Research is working on priority areas that will help improve the volume, quality and impact of dementia research.

Once this work has been completed, I plan for the National Institute for Health Research to put out a Themed Call for dementia research.

“The Themed Call will be an important statement of our intent. It will send a clear signal that we are serious about dementia research, that it must not be the hidden disease any longer and must now become a greater priority for research.”
