Medals for newcomers at Turkey World Cup

BRITAIN’S disability shooters returned from the IPC Shooting World Cup in Turkey with 4 gold, 3 silver and 2 bronze medals.

Head coach Pasan Kularatne said: “I am delighted with this superb set of results, particularly for our rising stars and I am really pleased to see two new shooters achieve the MQS at their first international competitions.”

Among the medal winners was international debutant Amy Hursthouse and relevant newcomer Ian Marsden.

There were also top performances from Matt Skelhon and Deanna Coates, both taking individual medals.

Britain’s Paralympic champion Skelhon shot 582 in the qualification round of the R1 10m Air Rifle Standing SH1 Men to enter the final in second place, but shot 100.6 in the final to beat Australia’s Ashley Adams into second place and take the gold medal.

Bronze went to Zoran Poucki, of Serbia.

Britain’s Ian Marsden, competing in just his second international competition, shot 557 and finished 13th.

Skelhon followed this up with a second gold, this time in the R3 10m Air Rifle Prone SH1 Mixed.

He shot 599 in the qualification round, followed by 104.7 in the final to take the top spot.

Silver went to Australia’s Elizabeth Kosmala (with 599 and 104.3) and bronze to Radoslav Malenovsky, of Slovakia (598 and 104.5).

GB team-mates Coates and Marsden finished 11th and 12th respectively, however all three then teamed up to take team bronze with a combined score of 1788.

Team gold went to Australia and silver to Slovakia.

Coates then took silver in the FTR1 Falling Target Rifle SH1 Mixed – IPC Cup.

But she just missed out on the podium places in the R2 10m Air Rifle Standing SH1 Women, finishing in 4th place with a total score of 487.7 – and less than a point away from bronze medal-winner Lotta Helsinger, of Sweden, (with 488.5).

Gold went to Slovakia’s Veronika Vadovicova with 496.8, while Turkey’s Suzan Cevik taking silver with 489.2.

British newcomers Lorraine Lambert and Lesley Baldwin also competed and finished 9th and 12th respectively.

Buckinghamshire’s Georgina Callingham then added to GB’s medal tally taking bronze in the R5 10m Air Rifle Prone SH2 Mixed.

She shot 599 and 105.5 to take the bronze with a total score of 704.5.

Sweden’s Wedin Victoria won gold with a total score of 705.8 (600 and 105.8) and Dragan Ristic, of Serbia, won silver (600 and 105.3, total 705.3).

GB’s James Bevis finished 6th, Adam Fontain 9th and Amy Hursthouse 12th.

The GB team of James, Adam and Georgina won the team gold in R5 with a total score of 1793, silver went to Australia with 1791 and bronze to Serbia with 1788.

There was also team silver for GB in the R4 10m Air Rifle SH2 Mixed with Adam Fontain, James Bevis and Georgina Callingham finishing second with a team score of 1766.

Australia won gold with 1789, while silver went to Serbia with 1756.

Individually Fontain finished 7th, Bevis 8th and Callingham 18th. British youngster Amy Hursthouse also competed and finished 23rd.

International debutant and youngest squad member Amy Hursthouse took gold for GB in the falling target rifle competitions.

At just 12 years of age she was also awarded a special prize for the youngest shooter in the contest.

The IPC Shooting Rules and Regulations insist only those who are in the world ranking list will be allowed to compete in Falling Target Rifle and Pistol events.

But, as an exception to this rule, organisers of the Turkish World Cup arranged a Falling Target ‘Turkish Cup’ for shooters who were not eligible to compete in IPC Falling Targets events.

Amy’s gold came in the ‘Turkish Cup’ FTR2 (Falling Target Rifle SH2) Mixed.

Ian Marsden then won silver in the FTR1 (Falling Target Rifle SH 1) Mixed – Turkish Cup.

The full GB squad for the event was Deanna Coates (Yateley, Hants), James Bevis (Hereford), Matt Skelhon (Cambs), Georgina Callingham (Bucks), Adam Fontain (Basildon, Essex), Lorraine Lambert (Portsmouth), Lesley Baldwin (Perthshire), Amy Hursthouse (Bucks) and Ian Marsden (Stoke on Trent).

The team was supported by coach Louise Minett, physiotherapist Joanne Hipkiss and support staff Julia Hursthouse.
