Dr Dan Poulter speaks at Blind Veterans UK’s awareness raising event

Dr Daniel Poulter, Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for Health, has backed Blind Veterans UK’s No One Alone campaign to reach out to more vision impaired veterans in the UK.

On Tuesday 2 September, Dr Poulter, who is also MP for Central Suffolk and North Ipswich, attended and spoke at a parliamentary reception hosted by MPs Simon Kirby, Gemma Doyle and Martin Horwood on behalf of Blind Veterans UK, the national charity for vision impaired veterans.

The event was aimed at highlighting the need to improve the current referral pathways to Blind Veterans UK for ex-Service men and women, once they have been certified as blind or severely vision impaired.

Dr Dan Poulter joined over 30 MPs, including Ed Balls MP, Mark Pawsey MP and Yvette Cooper, Shadow Home Secretary, and key representatives from the NHS and related charities, to meet a number of Blind Veterans UK’s beneficiaries and back the charity’s campaign.

Speaking at the event, Dr Poulter said: “Blind Veterans UK provides vital support to our Armed Forces community, and by being at this event, we are recognising the excellent work that the charity does to make sure that blind veterans are able to adjust to life with sight loss. We are committed to ensuring that all veterans know about, and have access to the support they need.”

Blind Veterans UK estimates that there are currently over 68,000 veterans with vision impairment who are not receiving the charity’s free, lifelong support to help them adjust to life with sight loss. Blind Veterans UK’s No One Alone campaign is reaching out to these, as the charity believes that no one who has served our country should battle blindness alone.

If you are, or know of, a veteran with severe vision impairment and would like more information about Blind Veterans UK’s free, lifelong support visit or call freephone 0800 389 7979.
