BREAKTHROUGH UK – who provide employment and training opportunities for disabled people – has been chosen to operate a new Right to Control (RTC) centre within its new Centre for Independent Living in Ardwick, Manchester.

The Office for Disability Issues set up the pilot RTC scheme to give disabled people the best support to live independently.

Breakthrough UK will develop the project with five local authorities – Bury, Manchester, Oldham, Stockport and Trafford, as well as Jobcentre Plus – ready for its launch on April 1.

The CIL hopes to support over 1,000 disabled people from diverse backgrounds – including those with learning disabilities or mental health support needs – over the next two years.

Breakthrough UK’s deputy chief executive Michele Scattergood said that the ‘trailblazing’ project will give disabled people more choice and control over the social care and employment services they receive.

Ms Scattergood (pictured) said: “Winning this trial scheme is a massive achievement for Breakthrough UK – we will be at the cutting-edge of supporting disabled people to shape their future.

“Right to Control is about empowering disabled people by giving them greater choice in order to live a more independent life.

“Disabled people know better than anyone what support is right for them and the CIL will help them to plan their support according to their aspirations.”

Seven local authority areas nationwide including Greater Manchester have been chosen as ‘trailblazers’ for the scheme which could be rolled out nationally if successful.
