Tufnell launches new parent unit

Phil Tufnell helping out at the new parents' unit

ENGLAND cricket legend and I’m A Celebrity winner Phil Tufnell donned a hard hat and high-vis jacket to launch a building project to create new overnight accommodation for the parents of children receiving brain injury rehabilitation at The Children’s Trust, Tadworth.

Phil is vice-president of The Children’s Trust, which runs the UK’s largest rehabilitation centre for children with acquired brain injury.

Children from across the country, come to the Trust’s centre in Surrey to receive specialist therapies and nursing care after a tragic accident or serious illness.

Phil said: “I’m always blown away by the amazing work they do here to rebuild children’s lives after a brain injury.

“You can see how important it is for parents to be close to their kids when they’re going through rehabilitation, so it’s great that this work will give more families that opportunity.”

The project will add a further nine new en-suite bedrooms to the existing accommodation for parents, as well as kitchens and lounge facilities.

Karen Bethel’s nine year-old son Paul has been staying at the centre since February after suffering a sudden, devastating brain haemorrhage.

Karen said: “Paul had problems with his speech and memory when he first arrived, but he’s been making brilliant progress. He’d only just started walking again when he came here – now he’s running.

“I’ve been able to stay at the Trust throughout his rehabilitation, which is important for us as a family and has really helped motivate Paul. He’ll be back home in a couple of months, which we’re really looking forward to.”
