Give us a call, say children’s disability charity

CHILDREN’S disability charity Newlife is urging parents of disabled and sick children to tap into its specialist nursing service which offers advice and practical support to families.

Calls to their national helpline, called Call Karen, rose by 62 per cent last year as many families report feeling they are left ‘high and dry’ by cutbacks and declining services.

In addition to giving advice, Newlife also offer grants and an equipment loan service.

Last year Newlife nurses helped award £1.2million in equipment grants to families for specialist equipment such as wheelchairs, beds, walking frames, seating, safety equipment and communication aids.

Nurse manager Karen Dobson, who heads up the team of Newlife Nurses, said:

“Many families are feeling confused and not knowing which way to turn. Our nurse team has exceptional experience and callers can rely on a trusted service used by thousands of families every year.

“We know many families have become stretched due to unemployment, economic changes and service cutbacks so I would encourage parents to tap into our knowledge of specific support for specific needs and contact us.

“We know many children are being denied equipment from statutory services and we are having to facilitate increased levels of equipment provision to rescue children from pain, worsening conditions, danger and lack of care or communication equipment.”
