THE TUC will be looking at the impact of the Government’s cuts on disabled people at a special seminar in London on Thursday.
The meeting will be one of the inaugural events of the first ever UK disability history month, which runs from today until Wednesday December 22.
The TUC is concerned that the Government’s swingeing cuts to jobs and services will halt the progress disabled people have made in recent years in gaining equality at work.
The seminar will discuss disabled people and the cuts, advances made in disability equality at work, and how unions can better represent disabled people.
Disability history month is supported by a wide range of disability groups, unions and voluntary organisations, and aims to promote disabled people’s rights and their struggle for equality now and in the past.
TUC General Secretary Brendan Barber said: “We are delighted to be involved in disability history month and to be amongst the first organisations to host an event.
“The awareness-raising month will provide employers with a good opportunity to raise issues of disability equality with their staff and customers, and for unions to focus on how they can better support and represent their disabled members.
“We hope the event emulates existing months such as black history month and lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender history month, and goes from strength to strength in the coming years.”
