Supporting Debt Awareness Week

BWClogoBETWEEN the 26th January – 1st February, the Bank Workers Charity supported Stepchange’s second annual ‘Debt Awareness Week’ which encouraged people to take control of their finances and raise awareness of free debt advice.

In order to support people manage their money, Stepchange has launched a new tool: 7 Days, 7 Ways.

Dealing with debt can be an intimidating process, and many people are unsure of where to start. Research by Stepchange has discovered that 50% of people waited more than a year between starting to worry that their debt was a problem and seeking help.

To combat this, and support people who are worried about their debt, the charity’s new 7 Days, 7 Ways email programme offers bite-size support and practical advice, showing that taking one small step every day can make a life-changing difference. You’ll still be able to sign up to the 7 Days, 7 Ways programme by visiting the campaign website.

Nasreen Memon, Stepchange’s Head of Media and Public Affairs, said:

“We know from our experience of speaking to clients that many people are frightened to face the reality of their debt problem. Simple things like opening a bill or bank statement can become overwhelming for those who are struggling along hoping that their circumstances will improve, or who are afraid to fully acknowledge the seriousness of their situation.

“Debt Awareness Week and the 7 Days email programme give us the opportunity to help people realise there is help and support out there, and that taking steps to deal with financial difficulty need not be as daunting as it may seem.”

Debt can affect anyone, regardless of their situation at work or home, and the Bank Workers Charity is here to assist current or former bank workers and their families who are experiencing difficulties and don’t know who to turn to.

Our website has a number of resources that can help, such as our guides on ‘Debt Management Plans’, ‘Debt Consolidation’ ‘Getting help with Debt’ and ‘Managing Debt’.
