Sad to say goodbye

RobinmainLAST week we heard the sad news that well loved actor Robin Williams had died.

Early reports stated this it was suicide and that he had recently been through a severe bout of depression.

Throughout the news and social media channels people were clearly shocked and saddened but it has also raised many debates; some around the understanding of depression and others about its treatment. In many ways it’s sad that it takes such a tragedy to highlight mental health.

At the Bank Workers Charity, many of our clients come to us with a mental health problem and other issues. We will always do our best to help and agree with a recent statement from Paul Farmer, Mind Chief Executive:

“Depression is a very real illness. It does not discriminate and can happen to anyone regardless of age, gender, ethnic group, profession or social status.
“We would urge anyone who is experiencing the pain and distress of suicidal feelings to seek help as soon as you can. It is okay to ask for help. Try and speak to someone, whether friend, family, their doctor or a charity such as Mind or Samaritans.”
