Jewitt is runner-up in New York finals

ALEX Jewitt brought a busy week for players on the Tennis Foundation’s Wheelchair Tennis Performance Programme to an end on Sunday with runners-up honours in both the men’s singles and men’s doubles finals at the Jana Hunsaker Memorial at Flushing Meadow in New York.

After bettering his fourth seeding to reach the singles final at the ITF 3 Series event, Jewitt narrowly missed out on taking American former world No 1 and multiple Paralympic medallist Stephen Welch to three sets as the vastly experienced Welch prevailed 6-2, 7-6(4).

“There were lots of long rallies and the second was very tactical throughout, but ultimately I didn’t serve well enough to win today,” said Jewitt, who is currently Britain’s No 4 ranked player.

Jewitt and his American partner John Becker went into the men’s doubles without a seeding, but having reached the final it was Welch that once again came between Jewitt and a title as the American paired up with his compatriot Anthony Anderson to secure a 6-3, 6-3 victory.

Jewitt now stays in North America for the Birmingham Canadian Wheelchair Tennis Classic, which begins on Thursday in Mississauga, near Toronto.
