GB name their women basketballers for Israel

GREAT Britain’s women’s wheelchair basketball squad has been annonced for next month’s European Championships in Israel.

Head coach Garry Peel has named a squad of 12 – with Judith Hamer returning to join the team that won gold at the BT Paralympic World Cup.

The GB side will face Germany, France, Israel, the Netherlands, Turkey and Spain in a round robin group stage in Nazareth during September 8-18.

Garry Peel said: “The Europeans will really give us an idea of how far this team has come in year and provide us with great competition. The depth of women’s wheelchair basketball in Europe has improved over the last few years so this will be an excellent stepping stone on the road to London 2012.

“The team is full of a mix of youth and experience, and it was pleasing some new faces such as Sarah McPhee and Natasha Davies establishing themselves at earlier tournaments to earn their place in the sides.”

The full squad comprises:

Caroline Maclean (Haverhill, Sussex)

Debee Steel (Newtownards, County Down)

Clare Strange (Beaconsfield, Buckinghamshire)

Helen Freeman (Watford)

Laurie Williams (Altrincham)

Judith Hamer (Exeter)

Amy Conroy (Norwich)

Madeleine Thompson (Hope Valley, Derbyshire)

Helen Turner (Chobham, Surrey)

Louise Sugden (Wokingham)

Natasha Davies (Epsom, Surrey)

Sarah McPhee (Preston)
