Brits off to a flyer Down Under

BRITAIN’S Gordon Reid and Marc McCarroll made winning debuts on the 2010 NEC Wheelchair Tennis Tour as they both eased in to the men’s singles second round at the Queensland Open in Brisbane.

British No 1 and world No 17 Reid was in fine form against American Lee Hinson, the Helensburgh 18-year-old earning a 6-0, 6-2 victory in his first ever NEC Tour match in Australia.

Third seed Reid, who ended 2009, his final season as an eligible junior player, with the world No 1 Junior ranking, plays Australian Andrew Browning in today’s quarter-finals.

Reid’s chances of progressing to the latter stages of the tournament have already improved after French second seed and world No 16 Frederic Cazeaudumec was forced to withdraw on the eve of the tournament.

Ickenham-based British No 3 and fourth seed McCarroll ensured his place in the quarter-finals for the second successive year after beating Australia’s Adam Kellerman 6-2, 7-5.

McCarroll plays New Zealand’s Eamon Woods in the last eight on Friday, having narrowly missed out in his three set quarter-final at the ITF 3 Series event 12 months ago.

Reid and McCarroll are top seeds for the men’s main draw doubles, which begins today  with the British duo set to take on Australia’s Daniel O’Neil and Germany’s Pedro Kruemmel.
