British players ready for clean sweep in Brisbane

TWO of Britain’s top wheelchair tenniis players remain on course for a possible clean sweep of the men’s singles and men’s doubles titles at the Queensland Open in Brisbane, the first tournament of the 2010 NEC Wheelchair Tennis Tour.

Gordon Reid, Helensburgh’s British No 1 and world No 17, continued his good form in his first ever tournament in Australia as the 18-year-old third seed eased through his men’s singles semi-final against New Zealand’s Travis Moffat, 6-4, 6-1.

And British No 3 and fourth seed Marc McCarroll ensured an all-British final at the first world ranking tournament of the season, the Ickenham player producing a determined effort to defeat Australia’s former world No 6 and local favourite David Johnson.

McCarroll’s 6-4, 6-3 victory ended Johnson’s hopes of winning the David Johnson Perpetual Trophy, the men’s singles trophy at the ITF 3 Series event named after the Australian in honour of his contribution to the development of wheelchair tennis in Queensland over many years.

McCarroll now bids for his first ever singles victory over Reid when the two Britons go head-to-head later today.

Once the final is over they will then team up to attempt to complete victory in the men’s doubles.

In Saturday’s men’s double semi-finals, top seeds Reid and McCarroll edged to a 7-6(3), 6-3 victory over Johnson, a former world No 2 doubles player and a doubles silver medallist at the Sydney Paralympics and his American partner Lee Hinson.

The British duo face Australian second seeds Michael Dobbie and Ben Weekes in today’s final.
