Beating stress is our great challenge

BWClogoTHE Bank Workers Charity supported National Stress Awareness Day by highlighting the different services we offer to help beat stress.

We are all living at a time of increasing pressures and this is as true of the banking sector as of the working population in general.

As a result, many working people and their families are seeing a negative impact on their wellbeing.

Stress can be caused by a wide variety of factors. The most common involve work, money matters and relationships with partners, children or other family members.

Stress is also now a major concern for UK employers. Official statistics show that the cost of work related stress is in the region of £70 – £100 billion a year, including healthcare costs.

Although research shows that a moderate level of stress makes us perform better, prolonged and excessive stress can lead to illness and physical and emotional exhaustion.

A recent YouGov poll shows that two-thirds of employed people say that the amount of work they are expected to do has grown over the past few years, and more than a third are expected to do unpaid overtime.

Despite the coalition’s efforts to help try and balance work-life factors through childcare and parental-leave policies, one in four people believe there is not enough flexibility at their workplace to balance work and their personal life.

At BWC, we offer a range of services to help tackle stress and other mental health related issues. Read our guides on understanding stress and techniques for managing stress or use our Beating Stress Interactive online resource which will provide information, advice, guidance and finally an action plan tailored for you.
